Current Opportunities
Please read below and contact me if you’d like to join our team. I am always looking for qualified graduate students (Master of Environmental Studies (MES) or PhD) and post-doctoral fellows. Some of my students arrive with social scientific research skills, but others did their prior degree(s) in biology or environmental science and are keen to move in the direction of the social sciences.
PhD Students: If you are interested in a PhD in Social and Ecological Sustainability (School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, University of Waterloo), please review the following. Note that the normal deadline for applications is February 1 in the year you’re applying.
First, please review my website to ensure there is some overlap in our interests; note that research in my group is social scientific in nature. Second, review information for prospective students on our departmental website about the application requirements and process.
If you are interested in being part of my group after reviewing this information, please contact me by email to discuss your interest in applying so we can work together to maximize your odds of success. Please include a brief cover email, informal transcript (if possible), and resume.
Master’s Students: If you are interested in a Master’s in Environmental Studies (MES, School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, University of Waterloo), beginning in September of your year of application, please review the following. Note that the normal deadline for applications is February 1 in the year you apply and that we offer very different Thesis and Major Research Paper (MRP) options for the MES.
First, please review my website to ensure there is some overlap in our interests; note that research in my group is social scientific in nature. Second, review information on our departmental website about the application requirements and process.

Post-Doctoral Fellows: I am always looking for qualified postdoctoral fellows who are independent researchers having strong social scientific research skills and a record of publication. If you have an external fellowship, please contact me about whether I can host you at the University of Waterloo. If you are considering applying for a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Post-Doctoral Fellowship, a Banting Post-Doctoral Fellowship (for exceptional candidates, even from abroad), or equivalent social science fellowship, please contact me early in the process to see if we might work together to enhance the likelihood of your success. In either case, please contact me with a brief cover letter, including outline of potential area of research inquiry, and your CV. For more information on potential sources of funding, click here.
Funding
If you are accepted into our graduate program, you will likely be eligible for full financial support through teaching- and reseach- assistantships (TAs and RAs). If you have won a major scholarship to support your studies (e.g., SSHRC), you may be eligible for a significant top-up from the University of Waterloo. Note, however, that international students usually require a complete funding package from external sources (e.g., grants and scholarships), so contact me early on if you think you may be eligible (or already have funding).
As one of my students, I will also fund your research, send you to present your it at a professional/international conference(s), and we will work together to publish it in a refereed journal.
My supervisory approach
Both undergraduate and graduate students and post-docs contribute significantly to my research, as shown by co-authored papers and talks in my CV, though I encourage them to become independent and to explore their own interests within the limits of my grant funding.
I place great value in my relationship with students and post-docs that I advise. If you join us, I will meet with you regularly (normally on a weekly basis) for us to discuss your evolving research plans, develop your proposal, select an appropriate methodology, and then write it up. Throughout the process, I seek to promote your intellectual independence as you experience the sequential stages of the research process.
